Softening the blow with murmured regret
The dentist intones what my tongue already knows
“That tooth needs a crown, and soon.”
Blast! There goes the new refrigerator!
Carried off by waves of why this and why me and why now
The tooth’s simple pain recedes, nearly forgotten
Buried under fast-laid sediments of self-pity and indignation

Point me to track 9¾ and just like Harry Potter
I clutch my cart, close my eyes and run at the wall
Trusting those who’ve gone before

They see what we’ve overlooked
They’re basting us in blessings

Refreshing cool of inlaid floor on soles of barest feet
Pull of muscles moving arms and legs in common beat
Caress of soothing air that’s perfumed warm and sweet
I take refuge in the lama, Buddha, dharma and sangha

In the beginning, impossible!
Like pi and the speed of light
Like the number of galaxies in the cosmos
A mind-stopping thought
An absurd imaginary number
The only thing to do is start

Done in a crowd, it’s not singular
Asking for help, it’s not independent
Dissolving, it’s not permanent
Reminders when taking refuge
Of ego’s deceiving falsehood
Off the Cushion

Off the soft and silent cushion, life is hard
Besieged and heartsick, often at a loss
When wounded by the hurtful daily dross
Not knowing what to do, take refuge
